Report Launch: Understanding Gender-Based Violence Response in the Humanitarian Context in Turkey

Having already fled their homes to escape violence, persecution, and violations of their human rights, refugees, asylum seekers, and other forcibly displaced people continue to face significant risks even within their countries of refuge. This is especially true for women, children, and marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ+ community.
Turkey, as host to the largest population of refugees worldwide, has a special responsibility in ensuring the protection of those displaced individuals who have faced or are at risk of facing gender-based violence (GBV). In this environment, governmental actors take the lead, but local and international non-governmental organizations provide a wealth of resources and services to the communities they serve.
What forms does GBV take within Turkey’s refugee communities, why might it happen, and what is being done to prevent it? As Turkey reels from economic uncertainty, COVID-19, and a rising chorus of anti-refugee rhetoric, HasNa’s recent report aims to address these questions based on extensive interviews with a variety of stakeholders on the ground.
Join us for this conversation with international and local protection and policy practitioners as we examine the struggle against GBV within Turkey’s displaced communities, identifying the most significant priorities, needs, obstacles, and best practices in the field.
Speakers
Dilara Türker is the Protection Supervisor at the Research Centre on Asylum and Migration (IGAM), where she works to provide psychosocial support and protection services to refugees and asylum seekers. She is a graduate of Çankaya University’s Department of Psychology and is currently pursuing an MS in Cognitive Psychology.
Ezgi Durmaz Chamoun is a Migration Policy Specialist at the Migration Unit of the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, where she works to research, develop, and design policy and programs targeting refugees and other minorities. She is a graduate of Galatasaray University and holds an MA in Public Policy and International Affairs from the American University of Beirut.
Fatma Hacıoğlu Sarıdağ is a Regional Programme Manager at the Humanitarian Programme of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkey, where she works on topics including sexual and reproductive health, key populations, and humanitarian response. She is a graduate of Hacettepe University and holds an MA in Women’s and Gender Studies from Middle East Technical University.
