Community Groups – Turkey

HasNa believes that all members of society must work in cooperation if cross-cultural understanding and sustained economic development are to be achieved.

Programs build the capacity of people who seek to improve their communities. We use training, relationship-building, and connections with American counterparts.

Programs focus on increasing skills in organizational management, business, and conflict resolution so as to enable non-governmental organizations and local associations to play a key role in peace-building and local development.

Training of Trainers: Engaging Men and Boys in Preventing Gender-Based Violence (Jens Van Tricht & Sandy Ruxton)

Between November 5 and 8, 2016 HasNa Inc. implemented a Training of Trainers project in Istanbul, focusing on Engaging Men and Boys in Fighting Gender-Based Violence. This training of trainers, conducted by experienced trainers and members of the MenEngage Europe Steering Committee – Jens van Tricht from the Netherlands and Sandy Ruxton from the UK – was the second phase of the 2015 Leadership Training for Turkish NGOs Fighting Against Gender-Based Violence. Leadership Training for Turkish Women’s NGOs Fighting Against Gender-Based Violence

From August 22 to September 5, 2015, HasNa brought a group of NGO professionals from Turkey to Washington D.C. for training on leadership skills, non-profit management and communication skills to promote women’s empowerment in their communities. The participants come from different backgrounds and they work on a variety of issues such as human rights, women’s rights, legal and advocacy work, women’s education and fighting gender-based violence.  Read More…

Crafting Peace: Armenian-Turkish Stonemasonry Cooperation Program

From September 23rd to October 3rd, 2012, HasNa and our local Armenian and Turkish partners brought a group of stonemasons, architects, cultural tourism experts, NGO professionals, and private sector representatives to Washington, DC, for two weeks of training, site visits, and meetings in order to promote cross-border efforts to preserve their common cultural heritage through restoration, the opening of new markets, and tourism.  Read More…

Diyarbakir English Language Training Program for Nongovernmental Organizations

HasNa and the Development Center have found that many NGO leaders cite the lack of English language skills as a critical hindrance to communication with partners in neighboring countries and with international organizations. Program Management Training Program

Across Turkey, nonprofit organizations work vigorously to meet the needs of individuals and communities in a diverse set of areas. HasNa’s Program Management Training Program seeks to equip socially conscious leaders in the nonprofit sector with the tools and knowledge to successfully manage and advance their projects and organizations. In 2010, HasNa brought eleven passionate leaders to Washington, DC between April 2nd and 24th to participate in the two-week Program Management Training Program. Read More…

Youth Volunteer Conflict Resolution Training Program

Recognizing the need and the benefit of teaching youth how to manage conflicts, HasNa conducted a two day conflict resolution and mediation training sessions for Toplum Gönüllüleri (TOG) volunteers and staff in Istanbul in 2008. TOG is an organization that seeks to achieve peace and social change by engaging the youth sector in volunteer projects. The youth volunteers develop and lead projects themselves, an experience which will help them make greater contributions as adults but also underscores the need for conflict resolution training that will enhance their leadership capabilities.  Read More…

Summer Camp Teachers Training Program

In 2006, HasNa sponsored a week-long training program for thirteen teachers at a summer camp in Sanliurfa, Turkey. Participating teachers taught English, agriculture, and computer lessons at the camp, which was established especially for the children of local farmers. Camp attendees came from many cultural backgrounds and ranged in age from twelve to fifteen years old. Some teachers notably lacked proper training in education or had no prior teaching experience. Camp administrators desired skills for teachers both to manage conflict among the 160 camp attendees and to integrate conflict handling and communication skills into their curricula. Read More…

CYDD Conflict Resolution Training Program

HasNa partnered with the Turkish organization CYDD in 2006 to organize a series of conflict resolution trainings for the organization’s staff and volunteers. CYDD (Ça?da? Ya?am? Destekleme Derne?i, or the Association for the Support of Contemporary Living) uses the skills and experience of its volunteers to bolster Turkish civil society organizations and improve the lives of underserved Turkish citizens. Most training participants are active in CYDD programs that teach young women and housewives crucial skills to help them find employment and achieve financial independence. Read More…

MUSIAD Business Training Program

Following HasNa’s training program for professionals from DISIAD, HasNa provided training in 2007 for a second group of businessmen from Diyarbakir, Turkey in business management and conflict resolution. The nine participants, all members of the business organization MUS?AD (Müstakil Sanayici ve ??adamlar? Derne?i), worked in various business sectors such as the health, construction, and food sectors. The goal of the training was to improve business performance by exposing the trainees to concepts such as corporate responsibility and human resource development. Read More…

DISIAD Business Training Program

In 2007, HasNa trained a group of businessmen and women from Diyarbakir, Turkey, in conflict resolution and business management. The 16 participants were members of the Diyarbak?r Sanayici ??adamlar? Derne?i (D?S?AD), a business organization that works in various industrial sectors such as construction and marble production. The participants were able to examine differences between business practices in Turkey and in the U.S. At the conclusion of the training, the participants wrote their own business plans which they intended to implement once they returned to Turkey.  Read More…

Sanliurfa English Language Program

In order to continually support the efforts of program graduates, HasNa sponsored English language training in 2005 for twenty past HasNa participants in Sanliurfa. English language skills are viewed by residents across the region as critical for participation in the global economy and for interaction with international companies and nonprofit organizations. HasNa’s 2005 English program aimed to empower program alumni to work for sustainable development in southeastern Turkey and to build new relationships outside of the country.  Read More…

Water User Association Chairmen Training Program

After five years of hearing stories from the engineers about their training, and witnessing their successes when given the authority to use techniques learned during HasNa training, the chairmen of the Water Users’ Associations decided to see it for themselves. In 2005, for the first time HasNa hosted nine chairmen from the WUAs in southeastern Turkey, who head the water associations and are also landowners and community leaders.  Read More…

Program to Strengthening Relations in the Harran Plain

Agriculture is the main source of income in southeastern Turkey and therefore, maintaining a positive relationship between farmers and water engineers is important to the development of the region. In 2004, HasNa awarded a small grant to Fatih Yildiz, a participant of HasNa’s water resource management training program in 2000, to conduct interviews and informational sessions with farmers and water engineers of the Harran Plain in southeastern Turkey regarding their often tense relationship with each other.  Read More…

Southeast Anatolia Water Resource Management Project

In 2000, HasNa began a long-term project aimed at improving the effectiveness of Water User Associations (WUA) in the Sanliurfa region of Turkey. The Southeast Anatolia Water Resource Management Project brings diverse groups of irrigation and agricultural engineers to the United States for training in water management, sustainable agriculture, farmer outreach, managerial skills and conflict resolution skills. HasNa focuses on training young adults because they have the greatest potential to become influential members in their communities. The program was expanded in 2002 to focus on the training of water engineers in conflict resolution and management skills.  Read More…
